It’s a question we get all the time: “Are psychics real?”
We’re going to save you a bunch of time and answer this question right away: Most aren’t, some are.
But the first time you get a legitimate reading, your mind will be blown – you will never see the world the same light again.
The Different Types of Psychics
It’s important to understand that there are different kinds of psychics. But for our purposes, you need to be able to differentiate between psychics and mediums.
Most people use “psychics” as a very broad term to encompass all types of spiritual readers. However, “psychic mediums” are different because they communicate with the dead.
This is important because it is easier, but still difficult, to verify the legitimacy of a medium compared to other psychics. After all, a real medium will give details that only you could possibly know about your loved one.
On the other hand, no medium is 100% accurate; nor can they connect with those who have passed over 100% of the time. Moreover, they don’t have fluid conversations with the dead. The dead may give them visions, words, or other signs that are ultimately up to you to make sense of.
This, of course, makes it even more difficult to verify legitimacy.
Now compare mediums to other types of psychics who give general readings. Many will make predictions like: “I see that you will meet a man whose name starts with S in the next 6 months.”
In this instance, the only way to know whether or not this psychic is real is to wait to see if their prediction comes true. But again, not every prediction is accurate and, to make things more difficult, because you have free will, you can alter the course of your future.
Predictions are only true in the moment they are given.
You can quickly see why it is so hard to know whether or not psychics are real. And perhaps this is why the question endures: there is no concrete, scientific way to prove whether or not psychics are real.
But many peoples immediately dismiss psychics abilities because they do not really understand them. We’ve been taught to think that real psychics should be able to predict the future with 100% accuracy, and be able to read minds.
But that is simply not the case. Real psychics have very subtle abilities, and cannot predict the future with 100% certainty (because we have free will).
Many studies have been conducted in an attempt to determine whether or not psychics are real, but none have conclusively confirmed one way or the other.
In a recent study, which analyzed 26 reports published over 30 years, researchers concluded that our brains can sense future events up to 2-10 seconds before they actually occur. In other words, we’re able to react to stimulus before the stimulus actually exists in time. That’s pretty cool, and probably suggests that we have some extrasensory abilities. It also suggests we may share a “collective consciousness” with other human, and perhaps, will all of space-time.
Now, if a normal person has this ability, do psychics have the ability to predict things several months in advance? Do they have an incredible ability to tap into the space-time continuum, or communicate with spirit guides to pass along future events? That’s up to you to decide.
You can read research until your face turns blue, but to me, reading personal anecdotes interests me the most. A comment on Quora really caught my attention. A young lady had a party and had a medium giving her friends readings. Her friends said she was amazing, but the young lady did not get an accurate reading. When the medium was leaving, however, she communicated with the woman’s dogs, and revealed something that baffled and shocked the woman.
Here’s what she said:
“However...as the party ended, and everybody was getting ready to leave, the Medium happened to mention that she could also read animal minds. Well, I had two dogs in the backyard; my Pit Bull, Dixie, and my Rottweiler, Cindy. So, of course, I had to challenge her!
I led the Medium to the back window, opened it up so she could look at my dogs, and asked her to see what she picks up. What happened next shocked me, and confuses me to this very day!
As soon as the Medium leaned out of the window, my Pit Bull froze, and came to a full alert in her body language. The Medium and Dixie made a kind of eye contact that was so intense, you could feel in the air. It was almost like my dog was hypnotized, or something!
What the Medium said after pulling her head back in the window just absolutely, positively blew me away! She said, and I quote, "Stupid paws the door and leaves me behind."
Now, I ask you, would that make sense to ANYONE? The Medium said she, herself, had no idea what it what supposed to mean. But I knew. I knew exactly what it meant, and why my dog 'said' it.
My back security door (which the Medium couldn't see, because the exterior door was closed) is out of line, and doesn't latch properly. The Rottweiler long ago figured out how to grab the edge of it with her paw to pull it open, so she could let herself inside. This was something the Pit Bull never figured out how to do, so she would be stuck in the yard until I came to let her in!
The Pit Bull was my baby first, and Cindy came much later into the picture, so the Pit was often a little jealous. It's no surprise that Dixie would refer to her as 'stupid'. Haha!”

Telltale Signs Your Psychic Isn't Real
While you’ll have to make up your own mind as to whether or not you think psychics are real, here are some telltale signs that your psychics is a scammer (read our psychic scams article).
1) They’re telling you very broad or obvious things that could apply to anyone
For instance, if you’re attractive, a scammer might say something like “Oh, I can see you’ve broken many hearts.”
2) They ask a lot of questions
The more you tell a fake psychic, the more they can play off of that information
3) They tell you that you’re cursed
This is one of the biggest scams around, and you’ll surely know your psychic isn’t real when you hear this one. Expect to hear that removing the curse is VERY expensive
Ultimately, it is up to you to decide whether or not you think psychics are real, but in our view, this is a very real phenomenon that, unfortunately, has been tainted by scammers and opened up legitimate psychics to unjust ridicule.
If you want to get a psychic reading, but feel silly doing so, you’re not alone. A lot of people don’t get readings because they’re embarrassed, but there's no need to feel silly - millions of people get readings every year!
